Peter Obi Says Nigeria’s Poverty Is Rooted in Leadership and Corruption

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has said Nigeria’s continued economic struggles are largely the result of poor leadership and a system that rewards corruption instead of confronting it.

Speaking at an event, Obi argued that the country’s situation persists because citizens often celebrate individuals accused of looting public funds.

“We are poor because we have chosen to be poor. We give titles and front-row seats of honour to those who steal public funds, and yet we expect to grow,” he said.

Obi compared Nigeria’s development with that of Indonesia, noting that the Asian nation shares similarities with Nigeria in terms of size and population but has achieved stronger economic progress due to more focused leadership and clearer national priorities.

According to him, during a previous interaction with an Indonesian leader, he was told that national development depends largely on confronting corruption, investing heavily in education and healthcare, and creating an environment where citizens can become productive contributors to the economy.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that countries that achieve sustainable development prioritize their people and support small businesses. He added that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) tend to thrive when governments provide stable, transparent systems that encourage growth.

Obi also urged Nigerians to become more active in promoting accountability and good governance.

“Join the fight for a great Nigeria. Stop worshipping those who steal your money, stop giving them titles, and stand up for what is right. Vote, defend your votes, and help produce good leaders at all levels—from councilor to president—and you will see the country change,” he said.

Earlier, Everest noted that the Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASVAN) had been following Obi’s political journey and believed it was important to support his aspirations for national development.
