A 35-year-old Nigerian woman, Gloria Makanjuola, has been sentenced to jail in the United Kingdom after being found guilty of assaulting a commuter and attempting to steal from the victim following a British Transport Police (BTP) investigation.
BTP disclosed this in a statement on February 25, 2026.
Makanjuola, of Cranbrook Road in Ilford, was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on Thursday 19 February to nine months’ imprisonment having pleaded guilty to Assault and Attempted Theft.
The court heard how on Friday 3 March 2023, just before midnight, the victim was travelling on an Eastbound Central Line train to Hainault reading a newspaper.
The court heard that the incident took place during a routine commute, where Makanjuola approached the unsuspecting passenger and physically assaulted the individual in an attempt to take personal belongings.
The attack reportedly caused distress to the victim, though no serious injuries were recorded.
Bystanders and transport staff quickly intervened, preventing the situation from escalating further.
Officers nearby to Hainault Underground station were informed of the incident, and at 1am an officer at a nearby petrol station saw a woman matching the description of Makanjuola.
The woman was quickly identified as Makanjuola and the officer arrested her in connection.
BTP Detective Sergeant Bronwyn Prew said: “This was a targeted attack on a member of the public minding his own business, so I’m very pleased to see Makanjuola jailed for her erratic and aggressive behaviour.
*There is absolutely no place for violence, robbery, or theft on the railway, and we will continue to prosecute those who seek to use the network for their own criminal gain.
“If you see someone committing a robbery or an assault on the railway network, or are a victim of one yourself, we urge you to contact us by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40 or speak to a member of staff so that we can act and get justice.
The judge condemned the behavior, noting that public safety remains a priority and that such offenses would attract firm penalties.
In delivering the sentence, the court stressed the importance of deterring similar crimes and maintaining security across the UK’s transport network.
Makanjuola was handed a custodial sentence, marking the conclusion of the case.
