Social Media User Arrested by DSS Over Alleged Threat to Peter Obi After Edo Attack

A social media user identified as Udeme Stephen has been arrested by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged online threats directed at former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi following the recent attack in Edo State.

According to reports, Stephen posted comments on social media shortly after news emerged of unrest linked to the Edo incident.

On Tuesday, February 24, Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, disclosed that Obi and several chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were attacked at the residence of John Odigie-Oyegun, a party stalwart.

Meanwhile, Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2024 Edo governorship election, alleged that his cousin sustained head injuries after being struck with a bottle during the attack.

In a post shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, @stevetom788, Stephen allegedly claimed responsibility for the attack and issued further threats against Obi.

In the message, he reportedly described Obi as “lucky” to have survived the Benin incident and warned of possible violence during future visits, including a planned trip to Rivers State.

“We warned Obi against his entrance into Edo State but he mistook our resolves to obidiots online noise. Thank his stars he survived this one,” he wrote.

“I learnt he’s going to my Rivers State. No wahala. Na my MEN go handle that one and dem no dey miss target.”

“Speak no peace to a bastard and wish him no long life, for he’s destined to die one.”

Security sources disclosed that DSS operatives promptly initiated a covert investigation, deploying digital forensic tools to trace the origin of the post.

The 26-year-old suspect was reportedly tracked to Rivers State, where he is said to work as a teacher at Jessica High School in the Eliozu area of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.

A security source familiar with the operation stated that preliminary forensic findings linked the suspect to the threatening posts.

The source emphasized that the DSS, as an agency responsible for counter-espionage and VIP protection, treats credible intelligence with urgency, regardless of ethnic or religious considerations.

Operatives were subsequently deployed, and the suspect was apprehended. He is currently in custody and is expected to be formally charged in court in the coming days.
